This ancient town rises from the Treja valley like a solemn
monument: the few remaining residents keep company with the increasingly
larger number of foreigners and artists who have bought old houses there,
transforming them into elegant homes. Various and cultural activities have
arisen around the old crafts shops (the "cacera", the "forno a
soccio", the "forno venale"), the "Documenta"
storehouse and the "Granarone", used far exhibits, conferences,
concerts and other events.
The collegiate church of SS. Cornelio e Cipriano
dates to the first half of the fourteenth century and has been enlarged and
restored several times. The relic of Jesus' prepuce was preserved here far
many years but was stolen.
Valle del Treja
Located in the communal territory of Calcata and Mazzano
Romano (in the province of Rome), the natural park reserve of Valle del
Treja is crossed by the homonymous river and covers an area of about 1000
hectares. On Mount Gelato, an old millstone at the Gelato waterfalls paints a
charming picture.
The "Natural Art Museum" in the park offers an
itinerary of artwork done with the taste and techniques of naturalistic
aesthetics. The group of artists who created this original open-air museum
used natural materials obtained from the forest to make compositions that,
inseparable from the surrounding territory, live in symbiosis with the
environment and the seasons, taking on their colours and scents.
