The collegiate church of San Silvestro, which was
enlarged and redone in the sixteenth century, currently reflects the lines
of its most recent consolidation work done in the eighteenth century.
Inside, there is an enormous sixteenth-century fresco in the apse area,
which has been attributed to the Torresani brothers, Lorenzo and Bartolomeo.
It depicts the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, the Flagellation
and Paradise. Over the side altars: the Assumption, St.
Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Gaetano, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Rose of
Viterbo, the Souls in Purgatory, and Our Lady of the
Assumption. The body of St. Justin, martyr, is preserved under the
central altar.
The Farnese castle was restructured in 1539 by
Pier Luigi Farnese, who annexed it to the duchy of Castro. It was completely
restored several decades ago by Countess Lia Mariani Bianchi-Ninni.
