Graffignano
Inhabitants 2313
It is part of the area of the Tiber valley in the eastern
part of the Tuscia area of Viterbo. Rising in the middle of the historic
centre is Baglioni castle. It was built in the early Middle Ages under
the domination of the Baglioni family, which lasted until the seventeenth
century, when the estate passed into the hands of Domitilla Cesi. At the end
of 1669, the estate of Graffignano was transferred to the family of Federico
Borromeo and, subsequently, to the seigniory of Scipione Publicola Santa
Croce. Its rectangular shape with a cylindrical tower that is twenty meters
tall makes it one of the most significant symbols of castle architecture in
the Viterbo area. Around the castle, which is not open to visitors, are the
so-called "case di dentro" with their characteristics outdoor stairs.
The parish church has a copy of the famous painting by Guido Reni
portraying St. Filippo Neri, a gilt and silver-plated wooden bust (eighteenth
century) with the relics of the saint, an eighteenth-century bust of St.
Charles Borromeo, a reliquary of the Holy Cross and a wooden crucifix of
the Confraternity of the Holy Sacrament. Just outside the town is the sanctuary
of Madonna del Castellonchio with several frescoes, votive offerings, and
a painting from the Umbrian school depicting Our Lady with Saints Sebastian
and Rocco.
