Located in the western part of upper Latium in the heart of
the Maremma area of Viterbo facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, this city is renowned
for its marina, with broad sandy beaches and apartments, hotels, bathing
establishments, a large pine grove and numerous summer holiday facilities. It
is also famous because of the nuclear plant in Pian dei Cangani, which was
left unfinished and has now become an industrial archaeology attraction. The
layout of the historic centre has a vaguely medieval appearance, with small
squares, alleys, large vaults and parts of the city walls. This area is marked
by the eighteenth-century parish church and by the Guglielmi castle,
although its fourteenth-century structure is now difficult to distinguish.
The power plant
The plant covers a vast area north of Montalto, in the
locality of Pian dei Cangani. Its nuclear facilities (reactor, turbines,
cooling systems and other equipment) were left unfinished and the plant is now
used for multi fuel facilities.
At the pleasant Information Centre, visitors can learn
about electrical power supply systems through panels, models, computer and
audio visual aids.
Accompanied by plant personnel and taking all due
precaution, visitors can also see the reactor and the other sophisticated
nuclear equipment.
The centre has a convention hall and a cafeteria.
