Piansano
Inhabitants 2309
The current layout of the town dates to the beginning of
the sixteenth century and was the initiative of Cardinal Alexander Farnese,
who entrusted the land-reclamation work to a colony from Arezzo. This group
was also responsible for introducing the cult of St. Bernardino of Siena, to
whom the parish church is dedicated. Inside the church there is a
chapel dedicated to Lucia Burlini. Subsequently, at the end of the eighteenth
century, the area was given to Count Alessandro Cordelli on perpetual lease,
and then in 1808 to the Polish prince Stanislaw Poniatowski, who kept the
manor for 14 years. The Palazzo Comunale is embellished by a Baroque
portico with a nave and two aisles, whose columns are preceded by unusual
pillars.
