TUSCIA
THE PROVINCE OF VITERBO
THE
NAME TUSCIA
According to local tradition, it was the Etruscans who
once lived in the villages in the north of Lazio, that gave the region
its name - Tuscia.
These villages are still situated in the same strategic
positions as they were 3000 years ago. The region is located to the
north of Rome and it has borders with both Tuscany and Umbria. The
landscape is a varied one, ranging from the Cimini Hills to Maremma, a
wide and wild stretch of land along the coast of the Tyrrenhian sea.
Viterbo, an ancient medieval city once host to the Papal court, is the
administrative centre of the province, a stone's throw from the volcanic
lakes of Vico and Bolsena, which boasts two beautiful islands,
Martana and Bisentina.
SEASIDE, HILLS
AND LAKES
The province of Viterbo is
divided in three zones marked by different enviromental and urban features.
On the west side Tarquinia and Montalto di Castro, few kilometres far from
the Tyrrenhian sea are surrounded by vaste plains of Maremma which extends
inland up to the area of Monteromano, Tuscania and Canino. The central part of the
province is quite rich of woody hills as those nearby Monte Rufeno, the
Volsini hills around the lake Bolsena and the Cimini hills around the
natural reserve of lake Vico. The east area is delimited
by the valley of river Tiber which winds through places featured by clayey
dunes onto which were built breathtaking villages as for instance Civita di
Bagnoregio.

WINES
Local wines, white ones above all, have often got
remarkable appreciations by important personages such as pope Martin IV fond
of the Vernaccia into which he used to deepen the eels of the lake Bolsena,
or the abbot Defuc who stopped on the way to Rome at Montefiascone
marking with three Est the local moscatello; he died later on from
drunkness and its coffin was made out the wood of the barrel.
The wine list includes white vines as Trebbiano,
Malvasia and Greco which make the Aleatico and Orvieto classico
best wines for fish and pasta dishes. Aleatico can be also found red and it is ideal for a
better tasting of the local hazelnut cookies called tozzetti.
